About

This blog will reflect the observations of what is going on in the world by an old man with not much else to do. Well, that’s not entirely correct.  It’s the middle of winter here in Michigan and the truth is there are limits to what I can do.

I’m 85.  I’m a career serviceman have spent a bit over 22 years of service, the first year and a half in the Army National Guard and the next 21 in the United States Air Force. I enlisted in the Guard two weeks after my 17th birthday, and then, after high school, I enlisted in the Air Force.  That was in September, 1949.  I was commissioned in the spring of 1958, and retired as a Major the last day of November, 1970.

I learned how to safely and accurately use a firearm, and I’m an avid supporter of the 2nd Amendment.

I have three children; a daughter now retired from a teaching career, a daughter working as a graphic designer, and a son working as an editor in the television industry.

I’ve been active as a VITA (Volunteer in Tax Assistance) and TCE (Tax Counseling for the Elderly) for the past 35 years.  We help low income and seniors with their tax returns.  This had led to some interesting side trips over the years.

I’ve also been a Hospice volunteer since 1992.  One can learn a host of valuable lessons about life from the terminally ill.

I’ve also been a volunteer in Community Dispute Resolution as a mediator since 1996.

I’ve been actively involved in lobbying concerning health care for retired military, and a spin off of that is that we now have a VA Outpatient clinic.

For the past year, I have been active with a group working to bring community awareness to the reality of Adverse Childhood Experiences.

I consider my self as a compassionate conservative, and I absolutely detest those who take advantage of the less fortunate among us.
